Separation Science

Coagulation and flocculation processes, filtration and dewatering, colloidal chemistry

Our research focuses on separation processes targeting aqueous organic streams such as wastewater, manure, industrial process streams, and lake sediments. We have analytical tools for the characterization of these streams and develop pretreatment strategies, including flocculation, as well as mechanical and chemical separation techniques. We develop mathematical models for filtration and dewatering processes.

Our expertise spans belt filters, filter presses, and advanced membrane filtration technologies (membrane bioreactors, micro- and ultrafiltration systems, nanofiltration, and forward osmosis) designed for water reuse, product purification and nutrient recovery.

We have contributed to research projects focused on:

  • Reducing nutrient discharge
  • Recovering phosphorus from wastewater and lake sediments
  • Improving water treatment in swimming pools
  • Developing biopolymers for flocculation processes
  • Optimized utilization of carbon sources in wastewater
