"Cloning, Reconstruction and Heterologous Expression of Secondary Metabolite Gene Clusters from Fusarium”
Plant pathogen filamentous fungi are capable of producing a broad range of bioactive metabolites. These molecules exert interesting chemistry and can act as toxins inspire drug leads making them extremely interesting from an agricultural and biotechnological standpoint. The focus of this project was to develop a method to copy and paste the enormous biosynthetic genes responsible for the formation of these metabolites from one microorganism to another. This enables controlled product formation and can aid the characterization process of novel natural products from fungi. The tools presented in this study have been used to hijack and express genes producing different fungal metabolites such as lipopeptides, plant hormones and a novel set of pigment compounds. The study is expected to serve as a guide for future endeavors concerning natural product discovery and fungal metabolite production.
