TITLE:

"Microbial community dynamics in anaerobic digestion"

ABSTRACT:

Biogas production is a promising form of renewable energy generation in which organic waste, including manures from agriculture and household waste, are converted into a methane-rich gas and a leftover fraction that can be used for fertilisation. Biogas can be combusted to generate heat and electricity, or upgraded further for use as fuel.

Hundreds of different microorganisms work together under anaerobic conditions to achieve this conversion. In the anaerobic digester, they are the workhorses and function as a fine-tuned ecosystem. These ecosystems require detailed microbial studies with focus on identity, function and responses to maintenance and operational conditions in order to optimize process stability and production efficiencies of the digesters (microbial management).

This thesis describes an investigation into the dynamics of the microbial communities performing anaerobic digestion. Whole digester systems were studied using modern DNA sequencing technology, to catalogue which microorganisms are present in digesters processing manure and household waste and investigate the response of microbial communities to different scenarios that can occur during digester operation, such as changes to the operational temperature. The obtained results of this thesis improve the knowledge about anaerobic digester systems, and contribute to the development of practical tools to manage the microbial communities more efficiently.
